Self Portrait From College
Considering myself an abstract surrealist artist, I love vast imaginary spaces as subject matter. The expressiveness and precision of line inspires me and much of my work is linear. I populate my spaces with figures and objects that are childlike, comical, and tragic. The abstract landscapes they inhabit are fantastic with some literal elements. I play with density and concretion at the most general level when I compose using the literal image as a diving board from which to jump into abstract, imaginary spaces. My realistic style is somewhat impressionistic and deconstructed. During the art making process, I work intuitively. Many of my ideas come as a stream of consciousness as I work as if viewing a waking dream and recording what I see or feel.
William Chester Bishop was born and grew up in the Denver Colorado area. He studied art at Metro State College in Denver, Western State College of Gunnison where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a double major in math and art, and completed an Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design from Platte College in Aurora, Colorado. While at Western State College, the late Ludwig Stromayer taught William the art of generating abstract visual spaces. At the same time, William was working toward a greater understanding of how space itself might be defined differently through his study of theoretical math. He continued his studies through courses with Margaretta Gilboy at the Art Students League of Denver; spending decades internalizing ‘the uninstructed figure drawing’ sessions learning how to incorporate the human form into his drawings. He now works out of his GeotechART studio at Geotech Environmental Equipment, Inc. where he experiments in watercolor and explores the drawing style he has patiently developed over the last 30 years — now tentatively called his Jazzyscript Archifract or Wispyfract drawings.
